Student Spotlight: Velma

July 2022

Hello! My name is Annique, however my pole alias is Velma (per my Instagram very.velma). I started at the pole studio in January 2020 with VERY low expectations for myself. I was never ever a dancer at even the most basic parties, I definitely put the “A” in awkward for a longgggg time before my pole journey. When I started though, I told myself no matter what- I can only start dancing better from here on out!

Over the next few months I fell in love with my new found fluidity, even though it wasn’t anything compared to my pole progress now I was super proud of myself for even doing a body roll! And not only the physical movement, but my many MANY pole sisters (and brother!) who were along the way to support me physically, mentally, emotionally, and much more! I began working at the front desk in January 2021 where I truly became a part of the fabric of P&A.

Since then, I have only gotten stronger in pole, started inverting, competed and placed 3rd in PSO 2021, got my Liquid Motion 1.0 certification in October of 2021 that launched my love for floorwork, and now I am here to announce I am teaching Level 1 Pole to come full circle! It feels so surreal to be on the other side of first-timers like I once was, but my BEST piece of advice is to never fully expect to master something new in pole! It looks easy from a distance, but when you get down to the nitty-gritty just know: consistency is KEY and strength takes a long time to build! Pole won’t come overnight, but if you keep coming it will surely follow!
